THE SHADOWS OF PAPER TREES

The Shadows of Paper Trees is an experimental short film odyssey that illustrates, interprets, and illuminates verses from “Panjereh” (Window) by the late, legendary Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad (as read by Forough Saramolki). Sometimes referred to as the Persian Sylvia Plath, Farrokhzad often explores female desire, identity, cultural critique, and political commentary in her poems. Time-collapsed images of nature from the filmmakers’ home window and the surrounding Northern Vermont environs collide with reverie-soaked tableaus. Featuring an immersive sound design by Owen Granich-Young, atmospheric score & cinematography by Christopher Dreisbach, and a new translation of the poem by the film’s co-director, Aida Daneshvar.

The Shadows of Paper Trees è un’odissea cinematografica sperimentale che illustra, interpreta e illumina i versi di “Panjereh” (Finestra) della defunta e leggendaria poetessa iraniana Forough Farrokhzad (letto da Forough Saramolki). A volte chiamata la Sylvia Plath persiana, Farrokhzad esplora spesso il desiderio femminile, l’identità, la critica culturale e il commento politico nelle sue poesie. Immagini temporali della natura dalla finestra di casa dei registi e dai dintorni del nord del Vermont si scontrano con tableaux intrisi di sogno. Con una progettazione del suono immersiva di Owen Granich-Young, una colonna sonora atmosferica e cinematografia di Christopher Dreisbach, e una nuova traduzione della poesia della co-regista del film, Aida Daneshvar.
